Making a Warp-Weighted Loom

Janis Stemmermann
January 2017

For the past year, I have been working on a project to make my own loom. Although much of my recent work has been in textiles, what drew me into the project was the excitement of making the loom. As this new video documents, shaping each part of this loom from scratch has allowed me to rekindle work from my past and bring it along in an exploration through the act of making into a new dialog between wood, clay, and wool.

Come Join Us for a Weaving Weekend

Come join us for a warp-weighted loom weaving open house, February 4th and 5th. As part of an ongoing exploration, this will be a participatory event, weaving the next blanket in a series. On Saturday, we will be dressing and preparing the loom, making clay weights, and dyeing some wool. Sunday, we will be doing yarn preparation and weaving all day long. Please stop in to observe or take part. Please contact us at workshops@russelljanis.com for more information.
